Suzanne M. Bump
Suzanne M. Bump is the 25th Auditor of the Commonwealth, one of six constitutional officers in Massachusetts, and the first female to serve in this role in the state’s history. Since being elected to office in 2010, Auditor Bump has made it her mission to make government work better. To her, better government means government that is more effective, more efficient, more accountable and more transparent. To model the behavior she expects in government, Auditor Bump has implemented the highest standards of professionalism and performance for her office and strives for innovation through the use of emerging technologies. Upon taking office, Auditor Bump was able to lead her office in just three years from failing an outside review from the National State Auditor’s Association to receiving its highest rating in 2014. Reaching across multiple agencies, state audits in the 21st Century now evaluate whole government systems. In her first term, Auditor Bump prioritized overarching challenges such as:
- Effective Management of Public Resources Performance audits of state agencies and state contractors look beyond normal compliance with laws and rules to also evaluate the quality of services provided.
- Child Welfare & Education Keeping children safe from harm and fostering a successful future is one of government’s most basic purposes. Audit work has led to more frequent inspections of child care facilities, improved background checks for providers, improved oversight of special education services, and systematic improvements to prevent bullying.
- Integrity in Public Benefit Programs MassHealth, nutritional assistance, child care, and other public benefit programs invaluable support to some of our most vulnerable citizens. Agency audits and individual investigations have led to improved eligibility systems, identified millions of dollars in fraud activity, and have put an end to abusive practices by medical providers.
- Improving the Municipal and State Relationship The office’s Division of Local Mandates is a resource for cities and towns seeking direction and analysis regarding compliance with state laws and regulations. Auditor Bump’s mandate determinations have resulted in millions in financial relief for local communities.
Prior to her election, Auditor Bump served in Governor Deval Patrick’s cabinet as Secretary of Labor and Workforce Development and had represented the Town of Braintree for eight years in House of Representatives. In the private sector, she worked as a business advocate, legal counsel, and has sat on the boards of numerous non-profit organizations including the South Shore Chamber of Commerce and St. Francis House. Auditor Bump currently chairs the Municipal Finance Oversight Board, serves on the board of the Public Employee Retirement Administration Commission, the Massachusetts Teachers’ Retirement System, and is the Immediate Past President of the Association of Governmental Accounting’s Boston Chapter. A native of Whitman, Massachusetts, Auditor Bump attended Cardinal Spellman High School and is a graduate of Boston College and Suffolk University School of Law. She now lives in Great Barrington with her husband Paul McDevitt.
